Animal rights protesters,
led by an AIDS activist from San Francisco, blocked traffic Saturday
afternoon during a march from Emory University's gates to the Yerkes
Regional Primate Research Center where police eventually arrested seven
demonstrators.
The biannual demonstration
against animal research drew nearly 100 protesters from In Defense of
Animals. It also included former Black Panther Bobby Seale, six members
of ACT-UP San Francisco and two masked men who said they were associated
with the more radical Animal Liberation Front, a group that on its Web
site advocates bombing fur farms.
San Francisco AIDS
activist Michael Bellefountaine, who said he wants research grant money
redirected to AIDS victims, led a band of demonstrators who sat down
and blocked traffic on Clifton Road at the heart of Emory's campus,
then marched to Yerkes' gate, where they were met by DeKalb police in
riot gear. Five demonstrators were arrested after they crossed police
lines, and two others subsequently were arrested.
